Using Your HSA or FSA for Holistic Health Services

Published March 20th, 2026
Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) let you use pre-tax dollars toward qualified medical expenses. For many people exploring natural, holistic care, these accounts can help make ongoing wellness services more affordable.
At Nature’s Restorative Health, we accept HSA and FSA cards as a form of payment. Whether a specific service qualifies, however, depends on your individual plan. Here’s what to know before you book.
How HSA and FSA Eligibility Works
HSA and FSA funds are meant for qualified medical expenses, which are generally costs related to diagnosing, treating, or preventing a health condition. Services used mainly for general wellness or relaxation are less likely to qualify.
When reviewing a holistic service, plan administrators typically look at:
Purpose: whether the service addresses a specific health concern
Provider: whether it’s delivered by a qualified practitioner
Documentation: whether you have an itemized receipt showing the service, date, and fee
Some plans may also require a Letter of Medical Necessity from a licensed medical provider, especially for complementary therapies.
Naturopathic Consultations
Consultations focused on evaluating and addressing specific health concerns may be eligible under some plans. Because coverage for naturopathic care varies, it’s best to confirm with your plan administrator before your visit.
Bio Resonance Therapy
Bio resonance therapy isn’t specifically listed in IRS guidance, so eligibility varies from plan to plan. Some administrators may consider it when it’s part of a broader plan for a documented health concern and supported by a Letter of Medical Necessity. Others may not cover it at all. Checking with your administrator ahead of time helps avoid surprises.
Acupressure
Acupressure is often reviewed in a similar way to other hands-on therapies. When sessions address specific concerns, such as ongoing discomfort, tension, or stress-related sleep issues, some plans may consider them eligible. Sessions intended mainly for relaxation are less likely to qualify.
Tips to Make the Most of Your HSA or FSA
Check your plan first. Before starting a series of visits, contact your HSA or FSA administrator with a description of the service and ask whether it qualifies and what documentation they require.
Ask about a Letter of Medical Necessity. If your plan requires one, your primary care or other licensed medical provider may be able to help.
Keep your receipts organized. Save itemized receipts and payment confirmations in one place in case your administrator requests them later.
Watch your deadlines. FSAs often have “use-it-or-lose-it” rules, so review your plan’s year-end deadlines to avoid leaving funds unused.
